Common questions

How do I give Flipside access to Apple Music?

Flipside plays the albums and playlists saved in your Apple Music library. If you pressed Don't Allow by mistake, open iOS Settings, find Flipside and switch on Media & Apple Music. In the app, HELP & SUPPORT has an OPEN SETTINGS key that takes you straight there. Your tapes then appear in the library.

Do I need an Apple Music subscription?

Yes. Flipside plays music through Apple Music, so playing songs needs an Apple Music subscription.

My shelf is empty.

Flipside needs access to Apple Music and something saved in your library. Allow access, then save an album or make a playlist in Apple Music and open the library again.

How do I load a tape?

Open the cassette lid, tap LIBRARY, then tap a tape. It drops into the deck. Close the lid and press PLAY. To turn the tape over, open the lid and tap the cassette. The other side plays from where the tape sits, as a real tape does.

What is the difference between a playlist and an album?

A playlist appears as a tape with its name handwritten on the card. The first half of the playlist goes on side A and the rest on side B. An album in your library appears as a printed album tape, with its cover art on the card and the songs in their proper order. In the library, SHOW MIX and SHOW ALBUM switch between the two shelves.

How do I change player?

Swipe the face of the shut deck left or right. If it will not swipe, a tape is playing or winding: press STOP first.

How do I share a clip?
  1. Start a tape playing, then press and hold the big arrow on the player. It works only while a tape plays.
  2. Say yes to record a clip to Photos.
  3. Pick a message for your clip and its length, 15 or 30 seconds, then press Record.
  4. The clip saves to Photos. Press Share to send it straight to your social media app, or pick it from Photos later.
  5. Add your song in your social media app. Flipside clips are silent, because Apple Music songs cannot be copied into them.
How do I add a widget?

Touch and hold the Home Screen, tap Edit, then Add Widget, and choose Flipside, medium or large. It shows the tape in your deck. Its keys work as the deck's do: one press of F.FWD or REW winds until you press STOP, a double press goes to the next track or back to the start of the track (inside its first 3 seconds, to the track before), and every press clicks.

Can I turn off the tape hiss?

Yes. The TAPE NOISE switch on any deck turns it on and off, for every player. To silence it for good, turn on Disable tape noise in SETTINGS: no tape then has tape noise, and the switches do nothing. Over AirPlay or a HomePod there is no tape noise.

How does Flipside work on an iPhone Duo?

Unfolded, the deck opens across both screens. PUSH TO CLOSE gives the player one half. Opening the phone stops the tape and opens the deck for a new tape. Turn on Disable auto eject in SETTINGS, and the music plays on when you open the phone.

Does Flipside collect any data?

Only anonymous counts of which players and features are used, to help improve the app. Nothing about your music is ever sent. To stop it, open SETTINGS and turn off Share anonymous usage. Full details are in the privacy policy.

Where are the instructions?

Tap FLIPSIDE on the player for the menu. It holds a printed manual for each player, tips, settings, help and support, and REPLAY THE TOUR.
